No need to worry
Hamburg is considered a generally safe city to visit. Like any busy European city there are areas to avoid, but as a whole visitors don’t have that many issues here.
Petty crime can occur, so it’s wise to practice common-sense precautions such as keeping an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded areas as around the Reeperbahn and public transportation. Speaking of the Reeperbahn, it can feel sketchy at times, but we never felt unsafe here. In the day it is generally quiet, and you might see a bit of homelessness, and in the evenings it is crowded with tourists and locals alike.
Areas we would avoid though is Hansaplatz, and the area located directly east of the Central Station. However, if you keep walking towards the Alster and Lange Reihe, you’ll come across nice restaurants and bars again.
