ICANN publishes Applicant Guidebook for the next round of new gTLDs

After more than 12 years of waiting, the time has finally come: ICANN has officially confirmed the launch of the upcoming application round for new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) for April 2026. At the same time, the complete draft of the long-awaited Applicant Guidebook (AGB) was published.

What does the Applicant Guidebook contain?

The Applicant Guidebook that has now been published sets out the rules, requirements, and procedures for applying for a new gTLD. It serves as the central reference work for all phases of the process—from application and evaluation through to delegation and ongoing operation.

The current draft version of the AGB is now open for public comment until July 23, 2025. This gives the ICANN community a final opportunity to actively influence the next gTLD round.

Key elements of the new Guidebook include, among others:

  • Clearly defined application procedures and timelines
  • Adjusted evaluation criteria
  • New rules on name conflicts and similarity assessments
  • Detailed specifications on the roles and responsibilities of Registry Service Providers

“Would you like to know what the Applicant Guidebook specifically means for your organisation? Contact us—the path to your own top-level domain starts now.”
